Wine Cap Mushroom

Stropharia rugoso-annulata

Easy to grow out of doors, and simple in a kit – in fact this may be the world's easiest mushroom. These mushrooms can grow to a foot or more across, and are good baked, fried, and in sauces, or just cooked in butter with a little lemon juice.

Richer flavor than a Portabella, is complimented by spicy flavors such as nutmeg and fennel. Great for stuffing, a single mushroom can make an entire meal. It is said to have a nutty flavor, similar to hazelnut

Nothing is easier to grow than this mushroom. Indoors or out, it simply thrives as long as you feed it right! Pick immature, with cap still closed for best eating. Larger ones with the cap open, up to about 4" across can be sliced, brushed with oil, and oven fried. This mushroom can grow up to 12" across, but it isn't really recommended that you eat ones that big!

They are good for animal feed, for most animals except horses. Nice to know since they can be expanded and grown easily through much of the year, providing a cheap source of supplemental feed.

They grow well in various compost mixtures and in decomposing wood debris. They are a good garden mushroom, and work well in mulched landscaping.

Wine Caps may help promote healthy skin on the extremities, prevent chilblains, hangnails, blisters. Now, from a religious perspective, I find this to be rather delightful. The Lord gives us a mushroom that grows prolifically around well-managed gardens, and then makes that mushroom provide a way to heal some of the damage commonly done to hands during the gardening process! Gotta love that!

We have Wine Cap mushroom spawn in our Mushroom Store.
