Puffball Mushrooms
There are many edible puffball types, ranging in size from small, to gigantic - up to a foot across, looking like a soccer ball.
All are easy to grow, but the Giant Puffball takes a lot of space. They are edible when picked with an all white center - once the center starts to yellow, they are no longer good. When they mature, the spores mature from the inside out, and eventually nothing is left but a shell and spore dust inside. They are a little softer than a white button mushroom, but still a fairly good edible.
Two genera that are popular for excellent puffballs, are Calvatia, and Lycoperdon. Less common are Bovista, Vascellum, and Calvobovista. All of these produce a white or tan outside and a pure white inside when the are young and edible.
The Giant Puffball makes good pig feed if it is picked before the spores turn green, large enough to make a difference in feed. May be useful in treating coccidiosis in animals, if picked small.
We carry a gazillion varieties of Puffball in our Mushroom Store.
