Fried Chicken Mushroom
Lyophyllum decastes, Lyophyllum loricatum is also edible and often referred to by this common name, and frequently mistaken for L. decastes. Several other Lyophyllum species also.
This mushroom was used to fry in place of chicken during depression. Dip in egg yolk, coat in chicken coating, deep fry.
Grows in clumps on decomposed logs or rotted forest debris. They grow in clumps, with anywhere between three and dozens of mushrooms sprouting from a single clump. The appearance varies widely, though it is usually a decent sized mushroom, and it fruits above ground so it is generally clean. The caps may be rounded and partially open, or fully unfurled and wavy with a sharp margin, and the color may vary according to humidity or even the growing conditions. Gills are generally white to start with, and spores are white, but some species may have gills that darken as they dry, others may not.
It also may stop the growth of some viruses if used early in the disease.
We carry L. decastes, and L. loricatum spawn in our Mushroom Store.
