Wine Colored Agaricus
Deep in the forests, in the fall and early winter, you may be surprised by a startlingly pinkish red mushroom with the unmistakable features of an Agaricus. This is Agaricus Subrutilescens, the Wine Colored Agaricus.
It has all the features that identify it as an Agaricus - pale pink gills in young mushrooms that deepen progressively to a dark chocolate brown, a partial veil that creates a ring on the stem with a smoother stem above the ring, and a coloration that is darker in the center of the cap and lighter on the margin.
Color can range from a winy-brown color to a plum color. It often has a circle in the center of the cap, of much darker color.
This is a rather poor image, taken with the only camera we had. It does not exactly show the richness of the color, or the finer details, but you can see the pinkish brown gills of the mid-sized mushroom, the ring of color on the button and the fully mature mushroom, and the shape of the stem and the ring on the stem.
Some reports on this Agaricus list it as having "may have an almond smell", but it does not - more sources list it as more of a "fruity" smell. It is probable that those who say it is almondy have mistaken their ID, and confused this mushroom with other Almond Scented Agaricus mushrooms.
This is considered to be a very good edible, and it is actually one of the easier Agaricus mushrooms to identify, but one of the harder ones to find. It likes shady woods, just about the time that the leaves fall.
It grows in woodsy compost with lots of leaf litter, and a bit of manure.
